Back in the vibrant ’80s, as an eight-year-old, the captivating workings of the vintage Singer sewing machines held my fascination. Its small spindle, reminiscent of a wheel positioned at the top, was intricately linked to a robust leather belt. This belt, driven by a foot pedal placed beneath the machine, was the heart that powered the Singer, turning it from a mere device into a creator of beautiful apparel. Each day, my mother would sit, completely engrossed in her sewing projects, working her magic to craft dresses for my siblings and me. Her dedication was unwavering, her work continued until the final stitch graced the fabric, and the garment came to life. No sooner had my mother risen from her chair, I would eagerly take her spot. My feet would find their place on the pedal as I watched, enchanted by the rhythm of the rising and falling needle. It was this same year, driven by this fascination and a strong desire to create, that I completed my very first sewing project.
